These grants and fellowships are designed to benefit the field of theatre for children & youth, to provide growth opportunities for theater artists developing work for the young, support the mission and values of CTFA, and honor to the intentions of Aurand Harris.

The focus and criteria for CTFA's HARRIS GRANTS and FELLOWSHIPS may be changed.
Influenced by the impact of COVID-19 upon theatre, schools, artists, and all practitioners of theatre for children, CTFA is wrestling with determining what will be our part in triage for our field of TYA.
We will leave our 2020 criteria, as a bookmark in our website. The new criteria will replace it, when our focus and process is clarified.

Theatre or Collaboration
THEATRE or COLLABORATIVE GRANT APPLICATIONS will be evaluated on their impact in their local community demonstrating their ability to:
● Promote theatre and bring the live theatre experience to children
● Impact their environment
● Impact their specific communities
● Applications will also be evaluated in light of
CTFA’s Mission and Values.

WHO MAY APPLY: Theatre and Collaboration Grant Applications
501c3 IRS certified nonprofit theatres in the USA, established for at least 3 year consecutive years, possessing a public record of artistic quality and with an annual operating budget of under a million dollars.
OR
A collaboration of a theatre artist and a small or mid-sized 501c3 IRS certified nonprofit theatre in the USA.
(Applicant theatres may apply under another organization’s 501c3 IRS certified nonprofit status if that organization is partnering in the proposed project. Large theatres should consult CTFA’s Founders Grant Guidelines.)
WHAT WE FUND:
➢ PEOPLE: playwrights, directors, designers, education directors, etc. engaged in a NEW initiative for a particular company or a new original play for children & youth
➢ EQUIPMENT: light boards, curtains, lights, vehicles, whatever will bring your company to a new level of quality
➢ TRAVEL: bringing collaborative teams together, participating in a conference or workshop, taking interesting people to interesting places for interesting purposes
WHAT WE DO NOT FUND:
•General operating support such as support for the regular and ordinary projects that are part of the on-going work or season of the applicant
•Projects that are already underway
•Free performances or ticket subsidies
•Activities undertaken for academic credit
•Projects proposed by theatres that do not have a one-to-one cash match •In-kind salaries and services may be counted if they are earmarked for this specific project
•Large theatres with budgets above one million dollars.

Individual Artist
FELLOWSHIP APPLICANTS will be evaluated on their specific development plan demonstrating the following:
● Impact on personal artistic growth
● Developed and increased awareness of and/or
demonstrated commitment to Equity, Diversity
and Inclusion
● Increased career marketability, stability, visibility
and/or new opportunity for their work
● Applications will also be evaluated in light of CTFA’s Mission and Values.

WHO MAY APPLY: Fellowship Applications
An early or mid career individual professional theatre artist, working in theatre for young audiences in the USA.
An artist does not have to be connected to a theatre to apply.
This can include playwrights, scenic designers, costume designers, lighting designers, directors and/or teachers.
WHAT WE FUND:
A development plan designed to build personal growth in theatre artistry, expand impact and awareness of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and develop increased career marketability.
Craft examples:
➢ Writing a new play -- by observing and working with a master playwright who is exploring new gender or racism themes;
➢ New Directing opportunities -- by completing a professional workshop expanding artistic technique;
➢ New Designing opportunities/techniques -- by studying with a master mentor;
➢ Designing a new space for children’s theatre -- by having released time to research design elements;
➢ Developing a new production program or a new touring project -- by participating in a collaboration opportunity not normally available to the artist and which is not part of his/her current job.
WHAT WE DO NOT FUND:
•Projects that are already underway
•Activities undertaken for academic credit
•Regular productions, teaching, writing or design work that are part of the typical projects, on-going
work or season of the applicant artist
•Any proposals that do not make a case for all 3 of the fellowship personal growth criteria listed above.

Aurand Harris, one of this nation's most published and performed playwrights for children and youth, enormously enriched the literature of American children's theatre. Plays such as "Androcles and the Lion," translated into 10 languages, "The Arkansaw Bear," "The Toby Show," "Rags to Riches," and "To Ride a Blue Horse," are but a few of his plays that fill stages in this country and abroad. Harris's writings, informed by his studies in Kansas and at Northwestern University and by his teaching, initially in the Gary, IN school system, and, subsequently, for over thirty years at Grace School in New York, have captured the spirit and interests of children for generations. Harris had a deep concern for artists, particularly playwrights, who devoted their careers to creating quality theatre for young audiences, and for theatres who produce theatre for children.
Aurand Harris’ author royalties, from the purchase or playscripts and performance licensing, are given to support the work of American theatre artists through the Children’s Theatre Foundation of America.
